ABERDEEN, Md., Nov. 15, 2008 ? After leading James Madison to its first Colonial Athletic Association championship, head coach Spanky McFarland was honored as the 2008 College Coach of the Year by the Middle Atlantic Baseball Scouts Association (MABSA) as the organization's annual banquet Saturday night at Ripken Stadium.
In 2008, McFarland guided the Dukes to a 39-19 overall record and a second-place regular-season finish in the CAA at 20-9. The squad, composed largely of freshmen and sophomores, went 4-0 in the CAA Tournament to capture its first CAA championship and qualify for its seventh Division I regional.
The successful campaign produced one All-American, three all-region honorees, three freshmen All-Americans, and two players who signed professional contracts with Major League organizations. The Dukes will return 20 of 25 lettermen in 2009 along with their third straight nationally-recognized recruiting class as rated by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.
In 11 seasons at JMU, McFarland is 343-283-2 with an overall career coaching record of 519-507-3. In addition to the 2008 CAA title, he has also coached the Dukes to a pair of first-place regular-season finishes, including the most wins in school history in 2002 with a 44-16 record. He has coached four CAA Player of the Year winners in his 11 season while 27 players have signed professional contracts.
MABSA was founded in 1970 and consists of 161 members, including area scouts, crosscheckers, scouting directors, baseball administrators, retired scouts, and part time scouts. The entire membership votes on the year awards, which also includes honors for baseball executive of the year, scouting awards, and a high school coach of the year honor.
