MOREHEAD, Ky., Dec. 18, 2008 ? Senior forward Kyle Swanston (Spring Hill, Fla./Hernando) scored 12 of his career-high-tying 23 points on first-half three-point field goals, and James Madison went on to post a 74-62 non-conference men's basketball victory at Morehead State Thursday afternoon.
Swanston hit on each of his four shots from three-point range during the opening period, and the Dukes as a team connected on eight of 10 three-point attempts while taking a 34-22 halftime lead. JMU raised the lead to 53-33 with 11:41 to play, held off a brief Morehead State flurry that got the Eagles to within 59-48 and pulled away again during the seven minutes.
The Dukes improved to 6-4 with their second straight victory while Morehead State, which plays in the Ohio Valley Conference, fell to 3-8. Thursday's game was played during the afternoon as part of a Morehead State promotion to involve elementary school students at games and was a return match from the Eagles visiting JMU last season in ESPNU BracketBusters play.
JMU shot 54 percent (26-48) overall and 62 percent (10-16) from three-point range while Morehead State connected on but 43 percent (23-54) percent of its shots overall and only 33 percent (5-15) from three-point range.
Swanston finished with six-of-11 shooting overall and hit on five of seven three-point tries. He also hit on each of his six free throws and had three rebounds, a blocked shot and a steal in 37 minutes.
