HARRISONBURG, Va., Dec. 21, 2008 -- James Madison scored the game's first 12 points en route to a 76-56 win over Bucknell in women's basketball Sunday afternoon at the JMU Convocation Center.
JMU improved to 5-4 while Bucknell's record now stands at 4-5.
Dukes' sophomore guard Courtney Hamner (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) scored four points in the opening minute of play and had six of JMU's first 12. JMU scored six points following Bison turnovers in the opening three minutes, and Hamner's layup at 1:17 put JMU ahead 12-0. Bucknell did not score its first points until sophomore forward Cosima Higham (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep Country Day) hit a 15-foot jumper at 16:48.
The Dukes led by as many as 13 points three times in the opening period and were up by that margin, 44-31, at intermission. JMU held a double-digit lead throughout the second period.
JMU sophomore guard Dawn Evans (Clarksville, Tenn./Northeast) led all players with 19 points and handed out a game-high eight assists. Hamner finished with a career-high 17 points, redshirt junior guard Sarah Williams (Wilmington, Del./Ursuline Academy) added 14, and sophomore center Lauren Jimenez (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) scored 10.
