FARMVILLE, Va., Dec. 3, 2008 ? Longwood outscored James Madison 27-11 over the game's final 8:43 and beat the Dukes 79-76 in men's non-conference college basketball Wednesday night.
JMU led 41-35 at halftime and 65-53 with 8:55 left but scored only four more points until the game's final minute.
Longwood, which improved to 5-4 with the win, went in front to stay, 71-69, on Ryan Bogan's three-point field goal with 1:45 left and led 74-69 on an E.J. Dawson three-pointer with 0:59 to play.
JMU, which fell to 4-3, pulled to within 74-71 on a layup by freshman forward Julius Wells (Toledo, Ohio/Libbey) with 0:44 left and to within 76-73 on a layup by junior guard Pierre Curtis (Denver, Colo./East) with 0:15 left, but Bogan hit on two free throws for a 78-73 Lancer lead at 0:13.
Curtis hit on three straight free throws after being fouled while shooting with 6.1 seconds left to get JMU to within 78-76, but Longwood's Kevin Swecker hit on one of two free throws after being fouled on the in-bounds play. JMU then was able to attempt only an off-balanced three-point try as time ran out from Wells, who was slipping prior to his shot.
Antwan Carter had Longwood's first nine points during its late rally, and Bogan followed with two-point and three-point field goals before hitting for his go-ahead three.
JMU shot 55 percent (16-29) while taking its halftime lead but slumped to 42 percent shooting (13-31) during the final period. Longwood shot 53 percent (16-30) during the final half.
