HARRISONBURG, Va., Feb. 13, 2008 – James Madison University football coach Mickey Matthews Wednesday announced that he intends to remain at JMU where he has coached for nine seasons (1999-2007).
The following is a statement from Jeff Bourne, JMU's athletics director, regarding Matthews and the coach's time at JMU:
"The athletics program and the university have been extremely pleased with the level of competitiveness and sportsmanship of the football program during Coach Matthews' tenure. The JMU football program is in an ideal position to continue competing at a national championship level for years to come. Because of this foundation, JMU's football program remains an attractive option for highly recruited student-athletes from around Virginia and the country as is evident in the most-recent recruiting class.
"We're very pleased with Coach Matthews' decision to remain as head football coach at JMU."
Matthews has compiled a 64-44 (.593) record at JMU, and his teams have competed in NCAA post-season play during three of the last four seasons. The Dukes won the 2004 national championship and also reached post-season play under Matthews during the 1999, 2006 and 2007 seasons. JMU was 8-4 during the 2007 campaign.
Matthews said Wednesday he had taken part in negotiations that were "intense and detailed" with University of South Alabama officials regarding that school's head football coaching position but had withdrawn his name from consideration for the position when offered the opportunity for a second interview.
