BOSTON. Feb. 7, 2008 -- Junior forward Kisha Stokes (New York, N.Y./Murry Bergtraum) scored a career-high 17 points as James Madison won its fifth consecutive game, beating Northeastern 80-58 in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball Thursday evening at Solomon Court.
Stokes was joined in double figures by senior guard Tamera Young (Wilmington, N.C./Laney) and redshirt senior forward Jennifer Brown (Brooklyn, N.Y./Martin Luther King), each of whom scored game-highs of 18 points.Young and Brown also had double-doubles as each pulled down game-highs of 10 rebounds. JMU improved to 8-2 in league play and 15-6 overall.Northeastern's record is 1-9 in the CAA and 6-14 overall.
The win, combined with Towson's loss to William and Mary and Virginia Commonwealth's loss to Delaware, gave the Dukes sole possession of second place in the league standings.Old Dominion is first at 10-0.
JMU scored the first five points and did not trail in the game, although Northeastern closed to within one on two occasions.The Huskies, who hit four three-pointers in the first half, stayed with the Dukes until the late stages of the opening half.A three-pointer by NU's Shalyese Smallwood with the shot clock about to expire closed JMU's lead to 24-23 at 6:52.
However, JMU ended the half by scoring 13 unanswered points to take a 37-23 lead into the locker-room.Five players scored for the Dukes during the run.
Northeastern got no closer than 10 points (55-45 at 11:13) in the second half.
Young moved into second place on the CAA's all-time scoring list as she extended her school career record to 1,858 points.She passed Clarisse Machanguana (Old Dominion '97), who scored 1,851 points, and Nyree Roberts (ODU '98), who scored 1,854.
Young also increased her record for consecutive double-figure scoring games to 36 and the JMU record for career double-figure scoring games to 99.She entered the game sharing the career record with Meredith Alexis ('07).
Northeastern's leading scorer was Smallwood with 14 points.Ashlee Feldman and Jasmine Crew each scored 12 points.
