HARRISONBURG, Va., March 12, 2008 -- The JMU men's tennis team played their home opener Wednesday, dominating Howard University 7-0. The Dukes improved to 5-7 with the win.
Madison began the day taking the first two doubles matches to clinch the doubles point. Howard did not have enough players to make up a third doubles team and had to forfeit that match.
Senior doubles partners Jesse Tarr and Carlin Campbell led the way, defeating Neilabh Avashti and Armato Nocera 8-0. The other doubles match was won by doubles teammates sophomore Mike Smith and freshman Jared Robinson 8-3.
In singles play the Dukes continued to control the match. Robinson won the no. 1 singles match 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (2) over Chris Brown, while Smith handled Avashti 6-0, 6-4 in the no. 2 singles match.
Madison got three more wins in singles play, one each from juniors Brian Rubenstein and Chris Armes, as well as by freshman Yaroslav Voznenko.
JMU will head right back out on the road, as they travel to Norfolk, Va. to take
