STONY BROOK ERUPTS FOR 16-3 WIN OVER JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va., March 20, 2008 ? Stony Brook University hit four home runs on a blustery day and defeated James Madison University 16-3 in a non-conference baseball game Thursday afternoon at Long Field/Mauck Stadium.
SBU improved to 5-7 while JMU dropped to 14-4. The Dukes had a 10-game winning streak halted.
The Seawolves entered the game with just 38 runs scored in 11 games but erupted for 16 runs on 15 hits, thanks in large part to four home runs. Stony Brook jumped out to a 14-0 lead after five and a half innings and never looked back. JMU had allowed just six home runs in 17 games entering the day.
Senior Tom Koehler (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) was equally impressive on the mound, allowing two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts in six innings. Freshman John Mincone (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hallow Hills East) took the loss for JMU with five runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Sophomore Rob Dyer (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) was 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, two runs scored, and three RBIs. Junior Steven Mazzurco (Newfield, N.Y./Newfield) was 2-for-4 with a three-run home run. Freshman Nick Thode (Huntington Station, N.Y./Walt Whitman) was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Junior Justin Echevarria (Uniondale, N.Y./Uniondale) had a three-run home run while sophomore Michael Stephan (Patchogue-Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) hit a two-run bomb.
Redshirt junior Brett Sellers (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) extended his career-best hitting streak to 14 games with a single, a double, and two runs scored. Redshirt freshman Trevor Knight (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) pinch hit midway and went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a double.
JMU will have a short turnaround by opening a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series Friday evening at 7 p.m. at Old Dominion University.
NOTE: The Dukes, who played their 18th game, had been off to the best start in school history since 1988.<>
