FAIRFAX, Va., March 26, 2008 -- The James Madison men's tennis team picked up their first Colonial Athletic Association win of the season yesterday with a 7-0 win over in-state rival George Mason. The Dukes are now 8-7 overall and 1-3 in the CAA.
JMU and Mason battled early for the doubles point as each team took one of the first two matches. In the No. 3 doubles match, freshmen partners Jared Robinson and Yaroslav Voznenko led 4-3 before winning the next four games to clinch the doubles point for Madison.
Robinson continued his solid play in singles play as he battled GMU's No. 1, Brian Fitzgerald, to a 7-6 tiebreaker win in the first set. He than took a 3-1 lead in the second set before Fitzgerald was forced to retire with an injury.
The Dukes did not drop a set in singles play as all six Dukes went on to collect wins. Junior Brian Rubenstein and senior Carlin Campbell bounced back from their earlier doubles loss to win their matches. Rubenstein defeated Harwood Hoskins 6-3, 6-2, while Campbell won against Jordan Lipstock 6-4, 6-4.
Next up for JMU is a home match with the Longwood University Lancers this Saturday, March 29. The match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start on the Convocation Center courts.
