PANTHERSVILLE, Ga., March 8, 2008 ? Junior left hander Justin Wood (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) limited Georgia State University to one run in seven innings while leading James Madison University to a 5-1 victory in game two of a Colonial Athletic Association baseball series on Saturday afternoon at The Field at Panthersville.
JMU improved to 7-3 overall and 4-1 in the CAA. The Dukes won their third in a row for the first time this season and were also victorious for the fifth time in six games. GSU fell to 9-3 overall and 0-2 in the CAA.
The Dukes scored in the first inning for the third consecutive game to grab the early lead and led 3-0 after three innings. Both teams scored in the sixth and JMU capped the day with an unearned run in the eighth.
Wood had his best outing of the season and tied for the longest outing by a starter. He limited the Panthers to six hits in seven innings, including only one for extra bases. Wood matched his career high from his last start with six strikeouts while issuing no walks. Three relievers combined for the final two innings to secure the win.
Redshirt junior Brett Sellers (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) had three hits for the third consecutive game with one RBI. Sophomore Alex Foltz (Mathias, W.Va./East Hardy) had a two-run home run, a single, and scored twice. Redshirt senior Joe Lake (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) had a walk and a pair of hits, including just the second home run of his career.
Redshirt senior Kenny Camp (Ellenwood, Ga./Southwest DeKalb) took the loss for GSU after allowing four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.
Sophomore Bradley Logan (Augusta, Ga./Westside) and redshirt junior Derek Simmons (Duluth, Ga.) each had two hits and a walk with Logan scoring the only GSU run. Freshman Mitch Rider (Suwanee, Ga./North Gwinnett) also had two hits.
The Dukes jumped right out of the gate with Foltz singling and Lake doubling to lead off the game. Sellers then grounded out to short for the RBI.
