LEXINGTON, Va., April 15, 2008 ? Virginia Military Institute jumped out to a 5-2 lead after two innings and held on for the 6-4 victory over James Madison University in a non-conference baseball game on Tuesday evening at Gray-Minor Stadium.

VMI improved to 18-17 overall while JMU fell to 25-9. The Dukes had won four in a row and 10 of 11 coming into the game. JMU also saw its road record fall to 12-3 after entering the game tied with the fourth-best road mark in the country.

Redshirt sophomore Daniel Wood (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) earned the victory to improve to 1-1. He held the Dukes scoreless for six innings on just three hits with five strikeouts. That came after freshman starter Jason Farley (Vienna, Va./James Madison) allowed four runs and nine hits in just two innings of work.

Three double plays in the first four innings kept the damage to a minimum. Redshirt sophomore Travis Smink (Herndon, Pa./Line Mountain) worked a perfect ninth for his fifth save.

Freshman John Mincone (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hallow Hills East) took the loss to fall to 1-3. He allowed five runs on six hits in one inning of work. Three relievers combined to limit the Keydets to one run over the final seven innings.

Redshirt junior Brett Sellers (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) was 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Redshirt sophomore Steven Caseres (New City, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) had a pair of hits.

Redshirt freshman Trevor Knight (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield), who was named CAA Rookie of the Week on Monday, had hits in his first three at bats with two singles and a double before flying out in the seventh. That ended a streak of reaching base in eight straight plate appearances. He walked in his final at bat on Saturday and singled all four times on Sunday.

Junior Mike Roberts (Prince George, Va./Prince George) was 3-for-5 with a run and two RBIs.
