NEWPORT NEWS, Va., April 18, 2008 -- The eighth-seeded James Madison men's tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to third-seeded Old Dominion at the Huntington Park Tennis Center in Newport News, Va., Friday. The loss eliminates the Dukes in the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, while the Monarchs advance to the semifinals to await the winner of the match between VCU and Hofstra.
ODU took the early lead in the match between the in-state rivals by winning two of the three doubles matches for a 1-0 lead. Alex Seleznev and Eidy Igarashi won at number one doubles 8-4 over the Dukes' second team All-CAA doubles team of senior Jesse Tarr (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) and sophomore Mike Smith (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson).
The Monarchs clinched the doubles point with an 8-2 win at number two. Rodrigo Souza and Tobias Fanselow picked up the win over senior Carlin Campbell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and junior Brian Rubenstein (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton).
ODU put the match away with wins in singles play at numbers two, four and five. Souza gave the Monarchs a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Tarr, while Matt Fawcett put the Dukes on the brink of elimination with a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Rubenstein. Yarkov Driskin clinched the match for Old Dominion with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Campbell.
Smith led Fanselow 7-5, 5-0 before having his match discontinued because the Monarchs had already clinched the win.
