CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., April 27, 2008 -- The James Madison men's golf shot rounds of 298 and 302 on its way to taking eighth place at this weekend's Cavalier Classic in Charlottesville, Va. The 21-team tournament was held at the Birdwood Golf Course and had 111 golfers participate.
The Dukes placed two golfers in the top 15 overall as junior Fielding Brewbaker (Salem, Va./Salem) and sophomore Jhonny Montano (Cochabamba, Bolivia/Cochabamba Cooperative School) shot a 146 in the two-day event to finish tied for 12th. Both golfers ended day one with 2-over-par, 74's and shot even par 72 on Sunday to finish at 146.
Junior Tim Driver (Harrisonburg, Va./Spotswood) posted the Dukes' only round under par as he shot a 1-under-par, 71 on Saturday. He carded a 78 on Sunday to finish tied for 24th with a total of 149.
Madison's final two golfers, freshmen Matt Neely (Ashland, Va./Patrick Henry) and Brian Stele (Spotsylvania, Va./James Monroe), finished tied for 83rd and in 104th respectively. Neely shot a 79 on Saturday and an 80 on Sunday to finish at 159, while Stele carded an 80 in round one and an 88 in round two to finish at 168.
The team championship went to hometown-team Virginia as they shot a 282 on day one and a 293 in the tournament's second round to finish with at 575, three strokes ahead of second-place Augusta State (287-291--578). North Carolina State
