WILMINGTON, N.C., May 22, 2008 ? Junior Justin Wood (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) worked seven innings and sophomore Alex Foltz (Mathias, W.Va./East Hardy) went 4-for-4 as James Madison University defeated George Mason University 9-4 on the second day of the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association baseball championship at Brooks Field.
JMU, the tournament's second seed, improved to 36-17 while third-seeded GMU fell to 29-24. The Dukes won their fourth game in a row and improved to 2-0 in the tournament, the only undefeated team left among five teams still standing. Mason will play top-seeded UNC Wilmington at noon Friday with that winner advancing to face JMU at 7 p.m. Friday evening.
Wood worked seven innings in a game for just the third time this season while upping his record to 4-3. He matched his career high with six strikeouts and allowed just six hits. His only damage was three hit batters in the third inning that all came around to score. Freshman Kevin Munson (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) worked two scoreless frames in relief.
Foltz matched his career high with his third four-hit game of the season, each of the first two games at Hofstra earlier in the season. All four hits were singles as Foltz also scored twice, drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and stole a pair of bases.
Redshirt sophomore Steven Caseres (New City, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional) socked a three-run home run, his 21st of the season and second of the tournament after hitting a grand slam in Wednesday's 6-1 win over Old Dominion. Redshirt freshman Trevor Knight (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) had two hits with a solo home run. Sophomore Matt Browning (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) and redshirt senior Joe Lake (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) each had two hits in the game.
Sophomore Dan Gerjets (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) took the loss for the Patriots after allowing eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Junior Scott Krieger (Towson, Md./Calvert Hall) had three of Mason's eight hits with two singles and a double.
