James Madison University has always taken pride in its achievements in athletics. There have been conference titles, NCAA appearances, and even national titles. Ranking among the top of the list is the 1983 baseball squad that reached the College World Series. With the CWS currently underway at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska, the Dukes this year celebrate 25 years since their remarkable postseason run.
JMU Sports Media Relations intern Matt Suttmiller recently sat down with former baseball head coach Brad Babcock to reminisce on the team's journey in 1983. Babcock coached the Dukes from 1971 to 1989 and still holds the most wins and best winning percentage at 558-251-4 (.689).

The Diamond Dukes of 1983, led by captains Dennis Knight and Jeff Kidd, opened the season with exhibition games against the St. Louis Cardinals, the defending World Series Champions from 1982. The goal for the season was simple, to make the NCAA Playoffs.
