ATHENS, Ohio, Aug. 31, 2008 ? Junior forward Meghan Bain's (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) first-half goal proved to be the game winner as James Madison defeated Ohio on Sunday afternoon in the Ohio Invitational Tournament.
JMU, ranked seventh in the nation by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association, improved to 2-0 while 20th-ranked Ohio dropped to 1-1.
Bain's goal came in the 15th minute of the contest and was assisted by sophomore midfielder Randi Segear (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin). It was the 17th game-winning goal of Bain's career, a category in which she ranks second all-time at JMU as she begins her third season.
Junior goalkeeper Kelsey Cutchins (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland) picked up her first shutout of the season with two saves. Jessie Martin had six saves for the Bobcats. JMU led the match in shots 13-2 and in penalty corners 6-1.
The Dukes will be off for a week before its next match on Sunday at #3 Wake Forest at 1 p.m. The home opener is set for Wednesday, Sept. 10 against Virginia at 6 p.m.
