HARRISONBURG, Va., Jan. 24, 2009 ? Charles Jenkins scored a game-high 22 points, including a jumper in the lane with two seconds left as Hofstra defeated James Madison 69-68 in a Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball game on Saturday evening at the JMU Convocation Center.
HU improved to 13-7 for the season and 5-4 in the CAA with its third straight victory. JMU dropped to 13-8 overall, 5-4 in the league. The Pride won for the ninth straight time in the head-to-head series.
Hofstra trailed by one with 12.2 seconds remaining when Jenkins brought the ball up the court, dribbled left, then crossed through the lane. He pulled up for a six-foot jump shot in a crowd of JMU defenders and converted with 1.9 seconds on the clock for the game winner.
Junior forward Juwann James (Jacksonville, Fla./Raines) led JMU with 20 points, his fourth 20-point game of the season, and five rebounds. Freshman guard Devon Moore (Columbus, Ohio/Northland) chipped in a career-high 18 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Junior guard Pierre Curtis (Denver, Colo./East) and freshman forward Andrey Semenov (St. Petersburg, Russia/Blue Ridge) each had eight points, six boards, and two assists.
Jenkins led the Pride with 22 points and six rebounds. Cornelius Vines added 12 points while Nathaniel Lester picked up 11 points, seven boards, and two steals.
JMU led for most of the game, ahead by eight with seven minutes left in the first half and up by four at the break, 34-30. Hofstra tied the score briefly at 37-37 before the Dukes responded with a 7-0 run to go back up 44-37.
The Dukes still led by seven at 48-41 when the Pride went on a 9-1 run to go up 50-49 with 9:09 remaining, taking their first lead since 2-1 early in the game.
Hofstra took its largest lead at 62-58 with 4:19 left when JMU got its first three pointer of the game from Curtis with 3:50 left. The Dukes still trailed by one when
