TOWSON, Md., Jan. 29, 2009 -- Towson outscored James Madison 19-3 over the final 8:33 en route to a 61-51 women's basketball victory in Colonial Athletic Association action Thursday evening at the Towson Center.
Towson upped its record to 12-6 overall and 4-4 in league play. JMU, which saw a four-game winning streak end, dropped to 13-6 overall and 6-2 in the CAA.
There's now a four-way tie for first place in the league standings, with JMU, Old Dominion, Virginia Commonwealth and Drexel all with 6-2 records. In other games among the league leaders on Thursday, ODU lost 75-62 at Georgia State, VCU won 75-61 at William and Mary, and Drexel posted a 57-50 victory at Hofstra.
The Tigers beat the Dukes for the first time since the 1983-84 season. JMU had won the previous 20 meetings.
The Dukes had matched their largest lead of the second half with JMU ahead by six, 48-42, with 9:01 to play.
