HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 10, 2009 -- Junior CJ Sapong (Manassas, Va./Forest Park) and freshman Paul Wyatt (Modbury, England/Ivybridge) both scored for the Dukes in the final 25 minutes of regulation as JamesMadison and 23rd-ranked (Soccer America) George Mason battled to a 3-3 double overtime tie in Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer Saturday evening at the JMU Soccer Complex.
George Mason junior Victor Freeman (Bowie, Md./Bowie) started the scoring in the 30th minute when sophomore Ryan Gracia's (Rockville, Md./Thomas Wootton) shot was stopped by JMU junior goalkeeperKen Manahan (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor). Freeman collected the rebound and fired a shot into the middle of the open net.
Redshirt junior Andrew Harvey (Herndon, Va./Herndon) tied the game eight minutes later by bending an unsaveable free kick into the back corner of the net from just to the right of the penalty area.
In the 40th minute, junior Parker Walton (Powhatan, Va./Midlothian) put the Patriots back on top when he was able to collect a pass that was accidentally deflected around Manahan and finish on an open net to put George Mason up 2-1 going into the half.
Redshirt junior Ernesto Marquez (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) put the Patriots up 3-1 when he received a pass from Freeman, took a dribble up the right side and bent a shot into the top-left corner of the net from about 25 yards out.
Sapong closed the gap to 3-2 in the 69th minute when he earned a penalty kick after he dribbled into the left side of the penalty box and was taken down from behind. Sapong was then able to beat the keeper to the right side of the net for his fifth goal of the year.
Wyatt's game-tying goal came in the 78th minute when a pass skipped off a defender and settled at Wyatt's feet about 20 yards out. Wyatt took one dribble and fired a shot into the upper-right corner to finish the scoring at 3-3.
JMU did not get off a shot in either overtime period, but Manahan was able to make a save in each to finish with five saves and preserve the draw. Senior goalkeeper Sean Kelley (Lexington, Ky./Dunbar) recorded five saves for the Patriots.
The tie puts the Dukes at 6-2-2 and 1-1-1 in the CAA for the year. George Mason is now 7-3-1 and 2-1-1 in the conference
