KAUAI, Haw., Oct. 28, 2009 - The James Madison men's golf team placed three golfers in the top 12 as they finished the 2009 Kauai Collegiate Invitational in second place. The event was held at the Puakea Golf Course in Kauai, Haw. this week.
The Dukes were one of two teams to shoot under par in the event, carding a 5-under par 859 in the 54-hole event. JMU proved the most consistent team in the event shooting an 286 on Monday, a 287 on Tuesday and concluding with a 286 on Wednesday.
Sophomore Mike Smith (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) finished tied for 10th to lead the Dukes. Smith carded a 4-under-par 212, shooting rounds of 71-69-72. He was followed by junior Michael Meisenzahl (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) and senior Jhonny Montano (Cochabamba, Bolivia/Cochabamba Cooperative School) in a tie for twelth. Both players shot 3-under-par as Meisenzahl carded a 69-72-72=213 and Montano shot a 70-73-70=213.
Freshman Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) finished in 27th after carding a 76-73-72=221, while sophomore Chris Wellde (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) rounds out the five-man Madison team in a tie for 42nd. Wellde shot a 78-75-77=230.
San Diego's Joseph Harrison won the individual portion of the event after shooting an 11-under-par 205. Harrison participated as an individual but was one of five Toreros to finish in the top six in the event. His teammate Alex Ching (69-69-68=206) fired a 10-under-par, while fellow Toreros Ben Murray (66-68-74=208) and Jason Shano (68-70-70=208) finished tied for third. Hawaii's Thomas Kua (67-71-71=209) finished fifth.
San Diego was a combined 35-under-par to cruise to the team championship, finishing 30 strokes ahead of its nearest competition, the Dukes. Sacramento State (290-288-287=865) finished third, followed by Hawaii (289-284-296=869) in fourth and Gonzaga (290-285-296=871) and Utah (285-291-295=871) in a tie for fifth.  Loyola Marymount (289-293-290=872), Weber State (294-297-295=886), San Francisco (292-296-300=888) and Seattle (301-305-304=910) made up the final four.
JMU concluded its 2009 fall schedule in Hawaii and will return to the course Mar. 1-2 at the 2010 Seahawk Intercollegiate, hosted in Wilmington, N.C. by UNC Wilmington.
