RICHMOND, Va., Feb. 11, 2009 ? Eric Maynor scored 13 of his game-high 22 points during the final three minutes of regulation and in overtime to lead Virginia Commonwealth to a 76-71 Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball victory over James Madison Wednesday.
Maynor pulled the host Rams into a 62-62 tie and forced overtime by hitting on two free throws with 6.7 seconds left in regulation and then had a three-point field goal early during overtime and a two-pointer and a free throw later during the extra period. He scored or was credited with an assist on each of the Rams' 14 overtime points.
VCU improved to 18-7 overall and to 11-3 in the CAA while JMU fell to 16-10 overall and to 8-6 in the conference.
Maynor's tying free throws late during regulation came after JMU was charged with a foul on an inbounds play from under the VCU basket. The Dukes then rushed the ball up court, but junior guard Pierre Curtis's (Denver, Colo./East) shot from the left of the lane was blocked by the Rams' Larry Sanders as time expired.
VCU never trailed in overtime and went in front to stay, 70-67, on Joey Rodriguez's three-point field goal with 2:10 remaining. A layup by sophomore guard Ben Louis (Melbourne, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) got JMU to within 70-69 with 1:33 left, but Maynor scored from in the lane at 1:16 for a 72-69 Rams lead. A Curtis field goal at 0:48 got the Dukes to within a point again at 72-71, but VCU's Bradford Burgess hit for a three-point field goal with 22 seconds left for a 75-71 VCU lead and Maynor added a free throw at 0:07 after a mi
