HARRISONBURG, Va., March 13, 2009 ? Sophomore guard Dawn Evans (Clarksville, Tenn./Northeast) scored all but two of her game-high 23 points during the final half to lead James Madison to a 51-49 victory over Northeastern in the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Basketball Tournament quarterfinals Friday evening at the JMU Convocation Center.
Evans had three three-point field goals during the opening 6:31 of the final period as JMU rallied from a 19-18 halftime deficit to lead 33-26. The Dukes raised the margin to nine points twice points before going nearly five minutes without scoring and seeing Northeastern pull to within 43-42 with 3:23 to play. Evans then had a three-point field goal and a two-pointer on JMU's next two possessions, allowing JMU to regain control at 48-43.
The third-seeded Dukes (22-8) won for the fifth-straight time and advance to a 2:30 p.m. Saturday semifinal game against second-seeded Virginia Commonwealth, a 72-52 winner over 10th-seeded William & Mary earlier Friday. Top-seeded Drexel (22-8) and fourth-seeded Old Dominion (17-12) meet at noon in Saturday's first semifinal. Saturday's games will be televised by the Comcast Network (formerly CN8). The tournament championship game will be played at 3:30 p.m. Sunday and will be televised by Comcast SportsNet Middle Atlantic.
