HARRISONBURG, Va., March 18, 2009 -- The James Madison men's tennis team won its second match in as many days, defeating Colonial Athletic Association rival George Mason 7-0 on Wednesday.
The Dukes improved to 4-10 with the win, while the Patriots dropped to 1-4.
Madison swept doubles play to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Junior Mike Smith (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) and sophomore Matt King (Lorton, Va./Robinson) set the tone with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles over Brian Fitzgerald and Daniel Schneider. Senior Chris Armes (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) combined with fellow senior Brian Rubenstein (East Hampton, N.Y./East Hampton) to clinch the doubles point with an 8-2 win over Matthew Vaughn and Imran Nayeem.
The Dukes continued to control the action, sweeping all six singles matches. Freshman Tommi Nissinen (Oulu, Finland/Kastellin lukio) did not drop a game in his match versus Schneider, winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3. All cruising to wins were freshman Ville Maaranen (Joensuu, Finland/Joensuun lukio) and sophomore Yaroslav Voznenko (Kherson, Ukraine/Khescon Tech Lyceum) who won their matches at Nos. 5 and 6 respectively. Maaranen defeated Arjun Sanghvi 6-1, 6-2, while Voznenko defeated Nayeem 6-2, 6-2.
