HARRISONBURG, Va., March 21, 2009 ? James Madison erupted for 11 runs in the sixth and a pair of sophomore pitchers struck out 14 Northeastern hitters in an 11-1 victory in the second game of a Colonial Athletic Association baseball series on Saturday afternoon at Long Field/Mauck Stadium.
JMU improved to 14-8 overall and 2-0 in the CAA. NU fell to 9-7 on the year and 0-2 in the league. The Dukes won for the fourth time in five games in the series.
The Dukes' bats were silenced for five innings until the 11-run eruption in the sixth. JMU sent 16 batters to the plate in the inning with 10 base hits and one Husky error, accounting for four unearned runs. The inning included eight singles, two doubles, one hit batter, and a walk.
Sophomore left-hander Alex Valadja (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Catholic) was the benefactor of the big inning to earn the victory after one of the most effective outings of his young career. He struck out nine in six innings, both career highs, while allowing just one run on four hits.
Sophomore Kevin Munson (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) worked three scoreless frames for his fourth save. He struck out five and allowed two hits.
Sophomore third baseman McKinnon Langston (Tallahassee, Fla./North Florida Christian) was 3-for-4 with his first two doubles of the season and three RBIs. Junior second baseman Mike Fabiaschi (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) also had three hits with a run and an RBI.
Sophomore shortstop David Herbek (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield), junior center fielder Alex Foltz (Mathias, W.Va./East Hardy), and junior right fielder Matt Browning (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) each had two hits for the Dukes. Herbek doubled, scored twice, and drove in a pair. Browning scored twice and drove in a run.
