TOWSON, Md., March 29, 2009 ? Austin Harclerode capped a five-run ninth inning rally with the walkoff two-run homer as Towson defeated James Madison 17-16 and clinched the Colonial Athletic Association baseball series on Sunday afternoon at John B. Schuerholz Park.
TU improved to 14-13 overall and 3-3 in the conference after winning for the second straight day. JMU fell to 15-12 overall and 3-3 in the league after losing for the fourth time in five games.
The Towson win capped a wild, offense-filled series that saw the teams combine for 80 runs (JMU 38, Towson 42) and 97 hits (49 JMU, 48 Towson) in the three games. In Sunday's finale, the Tigers scored 17 runs on 23 hits while the Dukes had 16 runs on 18 hits.
JMU led 11-3 going into the bottom of the fifth before the Tigers started their comeback. They scored three in the fifth, two in the sixth, and two in the seventh. JMU led 13-10 before the Tigers got two in the bottom of the eighth to make it a 13-12 game with one inning to go. The Dukes picked up three solo home runs in the ninth for insurance to grab a four-run lead going into the bottom of the ninth.
In the bottom of the ninth, center fielder Kevin Collins led off with a walk against JMU sophomore closer Kevin Munson (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) and third baseman Steve Yarsinsky singled. After a strikeout, catcher Jason Stifler drilled a three-run homer to right to pull the Tigers within a run at 16-15. After a walk by second baseman Chris Wychock, right fielder Austin Harclerode hit his two-run walkoff blast to left center to send Towson to victory.
Josh Squatrito claimed the victory for the Tigers after allowing three runs on five hits in three innings. Munson took the loss after allowing seven runs on seven hits in 1 2/3 innings. He entered the day having allowed two runs in 24 1/3 total innings this season (0.74 ERA).
Every batting spot in the lineup for Towson had at least two hits while the Tigers blasted seven homers. Harclerode finished 4-for-6 with a homer, two doubles, two RBIs, and three runs. Stifler drove in seven runs in
