HARRISONBURG, Va., April 5, 2009 ? A four-run fifth inning by the Georgia State softball team broke open a 1-0 game and gave the Panthers a 5-1 win over James Madison in Colonial Athletic Association softball on Sunday. GSU swept the season series over the Dukes at the JMU Softball Complex, after taking both games in Saturday's doubleheader.
JMU is now 20-11 overall and 2-6 in the CAA, while Georgia State is 17-14 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
GSU broke the game open in the fifth as center fielder Emily Whitaker led off the inning with a double down the right field line. She advanced to third on a single by third baseman Danielle Roddy, who moved to second on the throw to the plate. Catcher Catherine Lee plated both runners and chased JMU starter Jenny Clohan (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) from the game with a double into the gap. The Panthers got their third run of the inning on a double by right fielder Natasha Berry before a sacrifice fly by designated player Tiffany Bess capped off the inning.
Berry went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI, while Lee was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Madison had many opportunities against GSU starter Madi Gore, putting runners in scoring position in the first, second, fifth and sixth innings, but it only once was able to plate a runner.
JMU got its run in the fifth inning on back-to-back doubles by junior right fielder Courtney Simons (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) and senior third baseman Amber Kirk (Hamilton, Va./Loudoun County).
Gore picked up the win to improve to 8-6 this season. She allowed seven hits, one earned run, walked one and struck out two.
