HARRISONBURG, Va., May 15, 2009 ? George Mason pounded 16 hits and five players had multiple RBIs in a 16-6 victory over James Madison in the second game of a Colonial Athletic Association baseball series on Friday afternoon at Long Field/Mauck Stadium.
GMU, ranked 27th by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, improved the nation's best winning percentage to 40-9 (.816) while also establishing a school record for Division I wins. The Patriots improved to 19-4 in the CAA and ensured themselves of finishing the season without a series loss.
JMU fell to 29-24 overall and 11-11 in the CAA. The Dukes fell to a three-way tie for sixth in the CAA standings after their fourth straight league defeat. JMU needs a win Saturday along with either a VCU win at Delaware OR a UNCW win at Old Dominion in order to secure one of six spots for the CAA Tournament.
Senior Mike Modica improved the CAA's best pitching record to 10-1 after allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits with nine strikeouts in seven innings. He allowed just two hits after a four-run first inning by the Dukes.
Sophomore Turner Phelps (Roanoke, Va./Lord Botetourt) took the loss to fall to 8-2 after allowing 12 runs on 13 hits with eight strikeouts in six innings. However, only five runs against him were earned as the Dukes matched their season high with five errors.
