HARRISONBURG, Va., Aug. 14, 2009 -- Fans can get a sneak peek at the JMU women's soccer team Saturday (Aug. 15) when the Dukes scrimmage Virginia Tech in a 7 p.m. match at the JMU Soccer Complex.
Head coach Dave Lombardo, who is entering his 20th season with the Dukes, has nine starters returning from last season's team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament round of 16 before losing 3-2 at nationally second-ranked Portland.
Among the returning starters is senior forward Corky Julien (Williamstown, Ontario/Char-Lan District), the Dukes' leading scorer (16 goals) last season. Julien was the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-America third team selection in 2008 and was recently named to the Hermann Trophy national player of the year watch list.
Other returning starters include red-shirt senior defender Teri Maykoski (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) and junior midfielder Teresa Rynier (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley). Both Maykoski and Ryner are all-region and two-time All-CAA selections.
JMU opens regular-season play Aug. 22 at home vs. Richmond and hosts Bucknell, Xavier and Towson Aug. 28 & 30 in the JMU/Comfort Inn Harrisonburg Invitational.
There is no admission charge to Saturday's scrimmage.
