ALBANY, N.Y., Sept. 12, 2009 ? Massachusetts tallied the match's only score in the 21st minute and held on against a James Madison offensive assault in the second half in a 1-0 decision on Saturday afternoon at Albany's Alumni Field.
UMass improved to 4-1 on the season while JMU fell to 2-2. The Dukes lost their first back-to-back matches since falling in three in a row in September of 2006.
UMass had just four shots and two penalty corners in the match, but that was enough to tally a score in the 21st minute on one of the two corner chances. Nikki Panciocco and Cher King had the assists on Makaela Potts' tally that went just inside the left post.
JMU held a 14-4 advantage in shots, including 10-1 in the second half. The Dukes also led 11-2 in corners, including 8-1 in the second period.
Alesha Widdall had three saves for UMass while Kelsey Cutchins (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland) did not record a save in goal for JMU.
JMU will face Albany at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
