HARRISONBURG, Va., Sept. 6, 2009 - Junior forward CJ Sapong (Manassas, Va./Forest Park) delivered a goal and an assist to lead James Madison to a 2-0 win over Richmond, while High Point scraped past Rider 1-0 in Sunday afternoon's second round of the JMU/Comfort Inn Harrisonburg Men's Soccer Tournament.
JMU threatened early and often, accumulating five corner kicks and four shots before Sapong opened the scoring in the 20th minute. After collecting a ball that had deflected off a Richmond defender, he took two dribbles to the middle of the field and fired a 20-yard laser that found the top left of the net to put the Dukes up 1-0.
JMU's capped the scoring in the 74th minute when sophomore Jason Gannon (Vienna, Va./Flint Hill) sent a service into the box that found Sapong's head. Sapong directed it across the goal to senior Billy Swetra (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Absegami) who finished the job with an easy tap-in around Richmond sophomore goalkeeper Brock Tomlinson (Hoffman Estates, Ill./St. Viator).
Richmond had multiple chances in the second half, including two shots by junior Jake Russell (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut) and freshman Houston Oldham (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) in the 71st minute. Both players forced saves out of junior goalkeeper Ken Manahan (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor). The Spiders also had a goal by Russell in the 83rd minute disallowed on an offsides call.
The Dukes outshot Richmond 17-6, including a 10-1 advantage in the first half. The Spiders did not get off a shot until the 42nd minute of the, only forcing Manahan to make three saves to record his second straight shutout. Tomlinson accumulated six saves for Richmond.
In High Point's win over Rider, senior Malcolm Joseph (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) scored the game's only goal in the 30th minute. Sophomore Karo Okiomah (Austin, Texas/Hendrickson-Pflugerville) flicked the ball to Joseph, who knocked the ball off a group of defenders in the box, then controlled the deflected ball and put a shot into the goal from close range.
High Point held a 6-5 edge on shots, and Panthers' sophomore goalkeeper Michael Chesler (Highland, Utah/Mountain View) needed to make only one save to get the shutout.
