HARRISONBURG, Va., Sept. 6, 2009 -- Three James Madison players scored as the Dukes beat Liberty 3-0 in women's soccer Sunday evening at the JMU Soccer Complex.
JMU improved its record to 3-2-0, while Liberty dropped to 1-2-0.
All three JMU scores came in the opening half.
The Dukes' first strike came in the 23rd minute and was set up by a free kick by junior Teresa Rynier (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) from near midfield. She lofted a long ball into the middle of the box, where redshirt sophomore Jessica Barndt (Novi, Mich./Novi) headed the ball into the net.
Minutes later, freshman Katie Menzie (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) sent a ball down the middle of the field to junior Cate Tisinger (Clifton, Va./Centreville). Liberty sophomore goalkeeper Karen Blocker (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) stopped a point-blank shot by Tisinger, but Tisinger controlled the rebound, dribbled past Blocker and toward the left endline, where she sent a sharply-angled shot into the far right corner of the goal. The score came at the 27:01 mark.
JMU's third goal came just 1:09 before intermission. Sophomore Lisa Heise (Brandon, Fla./Nease) hit a free kick into the right side of the box to sophomore Yolie Anderson-Golhor (Ottawa, Ontario/Louis-Riel), who re-directed the ball with a header to senior Ashley Flateland (Fox Island, Wash./Gig Harbor), who then scored off a header.
JMU redshirt junior goalkeeper Diane Wszalek (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) made three saves in 76:30 of play and shared the shutout with redshirt junior goalkeeper Stephanie Poucher (Springfield, Va./West Springfield), who finished out the match but did not need to make a save.
