RICHMOND, Va., Jan. 21, 2009 - James Madison softball standouts Jenny Clohan (2006-09) and Meredith Felts (2006-09) were honored as the Colonial Athletic Association announced its softball Silver Anniversary team, honoring the top 25 players in the sport since the league's inception.
As part of its 25th Anniversary celebration in 2009-10, the CAA is recognizing Silver Anniversary teams in 21 championship sports. The teams are selected by a panel of current and former head coaches in the conference.
Softball has been a championship sport in the CAA since 2002. Hofstra won the first seven CAA championships from 2002-08. In 2009, the Dukes ended the Pride's streak by winning its first conference title. JMU has made the championship game twice, and the semifinals four times. Towson has advanced to the championship game four times and Georgia State has made it twice in just four years as a league member.
Felts (Greensville, N.C./J.H. Rose) was a three time All-CAA selection, including first-team honors in 2008 and 2009. In her career, Felts went 61-25 (.709 winning percentage) and set school records in strikeouts (581), shutouts (20), ERA (1.62) and complete games (52) and is tied with Clohan for the school record in starts (85). She is second all-time in innings pitched (589), appearances (129) and saves (seven). The Greensville, N.C. native also holds single-season records in strikeouts (184), wins (18), complete games (19) and shutouts (eight). Felts holds three of the top five seasons for strikeouts and her 1.25 ERA in 2008 ranks second in program history.
Clohan (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) received first-team honors in 2007 for the CAA, NFCA Mid Atlantic Region and VaSID after going 14-8 with a school record 1.21 ERA. In her career, she went 51-37 and holds school records in games started (tied with Felts with 85), innings pitched (592), appearances (129) and saves (10). In 2009, she helped the JMU reach its first NCAA tournament by going 17-9 with 77 strikeouts and a 1.65 ERA in 144.1 innings pitched, and threw a four-hit shutout in the CAA Championship winner's bracket game. In addition to her work in the circle, Clohan had a career .269 average with nine doubles, two triples, six home runs and 33 RBI.
