BOSTON, Mass., Oct. 3, 2010 - The Dukes won four straight points to close out the fifth set, overcoming a pair of match points in the process, on their way to beating Northeastern 3-2 at Solomon Court in Boston, Mass. on Sunday afternoon.
James Madison won by set scores of 25-20, 18-25, 25-23, 21-25 and 16-14 to win its second straight road conference match to improve to 13-4 overall and 2-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Northeastern dropped to 11-7 and 2-2 in conference action.
The Dukes were led by senior Lindsay Callahan (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) and sophomore Danielle Erb (Tampa, Fla./Plant) with a double-double in digs and kills each. Callahan recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 14 kills and 12 digs while Erb had her ninth with 14 kills and 10 digs. Junior Kelly Turner (Ontario, N.Y./Wayne Central) chipped in with 11 kills on .421 hitting. Redshirt sophomore Natalie Abel (Washington, Pa./Trinity) had a match-high 19 digs and added eight kills. Erb and senior Jessica Zeroual (Ottawa, Ont./De La Salle) led the team with six blocks each.
With her 14 kills, Callahan moved into a tie for fourth on JMU's all-time kills list. She tied Debbi Prince (1992-95) with 1,198 career kills. Next up on the all-time list is Allyson Halls (2004-07) with 1,305.
Nichole Kurz had a match-high 15 kills to lead Northeastern while Britney Brown had a triple-double with 14 kills, 20 assists and 11 digs. Caitlin Tittl had four kills and a match-high eight blocks. Jessica LaScola added a team-best 17 digs.
The Dukes outhit the Huskies .143 to .115 while NU held a 16-14 edge in blocks. JMU had 68 digs to Northeastern's 62 and each team recorded 47 assists.
The decisive fifth set was a was a back-and-forth battle. The Huskies grabbed an early 6-5 lead before JMU went on a 4-0 run and forcing a timeout. NU responded with a four-point run of its own forcing JMU to take a timeout. The Dukes won the next two points before Northeastern responded with a 4-1 lead to take a 14-12 lead. With not room for error, Madison won the final four points, including a pair of kills by Callahan to seal the match.
The Dukes return to Harrisonburg next Friday, Oct. 8, against UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m. It is the start of
