HARRISONBURG, Va., Dec. 30, 2010 - Senior guard Dawn Evans (Clarksville, Tenn./Northeast) scored 15 points to lead five Dukes in double figures as James Madison (7-5) crushed Western Carolina (3-9) 82-47 in women's basketball Thursday evening at the JMU Convocation Center.
The Dukes took a 5-4 lead on a layup from senior center Lauren Jimenez (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) 4:58 into the game and never looked back. The basket started a 28-10 run as JMU took a 31-14 lead into halftime after holding the Catamounts to 3-for-24 (12.5%) shooting.
The second half fared even better for the Dukes, as they shot 20-for-36 (55.6%) from the field and 4-for-8 (50.0%) from the three-point line, outscoring WCU 51-33 after the break.
Senior forward/center Jalissa Taylor (Chesterfield, Va./L.C. Bird) recorded her sixth career double-double for the Dukes scoring 10 points to go with a game-high 13 rebounds. Jimenez pulled down nine rebounds of her own to go with her 10 points.
Redshirt junior forward Lauren Whitehurst (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) and senior guard Courtney Hamner (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) also scored in double-digits for JMU with 13 and 10, respectively. Sophomore guard/forward Nikki Newman (Harrisonburg, Va./Turner Ashby) also racked up a career-high eight assists, along with six points and six rebounds.
Senior guard/forward Emily Clarke (Snellville, Ga./Gwinnett) scored a game-high 16 points to lead the Catamounts, while junior guard Kaila'Shea Menendez (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) had 11.
JMU dominated the boards, outrebounding WCU 55-34 for the game. The Dukes also forced 22 turnovers while committing just nine of their own.
