HARRISONBURG, Va., Feb. 10, 2010 ? Gerald Lee scored a game-high 18 points and Old Dominion won after building a big halftime lead, recording a 64-44 triumph over James Madison in a Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball game Wednesday evening at the Convocation Center.
ODU improved to 19-7 overall and 10-3 in the CAA. JMU dropped its fourth game in a row to fall to 10-15 overall and 3-11 in the league.
Lee finished the night with 18 points, six rebounds, and two steals to pace the Monarchs' effort. Darius James added 12 points and four assists while Ben Finney chipped in 11 points, all in the first half. Frank Hassell tallied eight points and a team-high nine boards.
Junior forward Denzel Bowles (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) recorded his 10th double-double of the season with team highs of 14 points, 10 rebounds, and three assists. Five other JMU players had between five and seven points.
Senior guard Pierre Curtis (Denver, Colo./East) posted five points, six rebounds, two assists, and three steals for the Dukes. His assist on a deep Trevon Flores (Harvey, La./Helen Cox) jumper on the left side with 15:44 to go set a new JMU career record with 421 assists. The previous total of 420 by Joe Pfahler stood since 1976.
The game was tight in the early minutes with a 6-6 score at the first media timeout just over four minutes into the contest. However, the Monarchs erupted on a 10-0 run to move ahead 16-6 at the 9:31 mark. ODU held a 14-4 overall advantage in rebounds at that mark.
JMU still trailed by 10 at 29-19 with 2:47 to go when ODU finished the half on an 11-2 jolt, including a pair of buckets apiece from Lee and James, to grab a 40-21 advantage at the break.
ODU maintained a comfortable lead throughout the second half with the closest JMU margin at 40-25 at the 18:24 mark following a pair of Julius Wells (Toledo, Ohio/Libbey) free throws and a B
