CHARLESTON, S.C., March 10, 2010 - The James Madison men's tennis team won its third straight match, defeating Case Western Reserve 6-1 at the Earle Tennis Center in Charleston, S.C. on Wednesday.
It was the Dukes' second win of the day, having beaten The Citadel 5-2 earlier in the day, as they raised their record to 7-6, while the Spartans dropped to 4-9.
Madison grabbed a quick lead, sweeping doubles play to take the 1-0 advantage. Junior Yaroslav Voznenko (Kherson, Ukraine/Kherson Technical School) and freshman Stephen Hardy (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) won their third straight doubles match, to improve to 6-5 in doubles play this spring. The duo beat Rohan Patel and Nicolas Howe 8-3 at no. 2 doubles.
Freshman Greg Vladimirsky (Coral Springs, Fla./Broward Virtual) and sophomore Ville Maaranen (Joensuu, Finland/Joensuun Lukio) clinched the doubles point with an 8-2 win over Alex Solove and Kyle Gerber at no. 3. Senior Mike Smith (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) and junior Matt King (Lorton, Va./Robinson) completed the sweep with an 8-5 win at no. 1.
The Dukes rolled through singles play, claiming five of the six matches. Vladimirsky set the tone for JMU, dropping just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Gerber at no. 2 singles. The freshman is 14-7 in singles play in his inaugural season as a Duke.
Sophomore Tommi Nissinen (Oulu, Finland/Kastellin Lukio) improved to 16-7 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Patel.
Voznenko, King and sophomore Jovan Milic (Belgrade, Serbia/Belgrade Sports School) claimed the remaining singles victories for the Dukes.
JMU will conclude its spring break trip in Conway, S.C. on Friday as they take on Coastal Carolina at 3 p.m.
