JACKSONVILLE, Fla., March 5, 2010 - Redshirt junior Kyle Hoffman (Reading, Pa./Twin Valley) struck out eight in 5 1/3 innings and junior Kevin Munson (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) tied the career saves record as James Madison defeated North Florida 12-6 on Friday night in the Kennel Club Classic at Hodges Stadium.
JMU won its second in a row to improve to 2-3. UNF fell to 3-6.
Head coach Spanky McFarland commented on the Dukes' win, "Hoffman pitched a good game and the guys responded well. Every time they scored we answered. The strike zone was at times inconsistent, which caused problems for both teams' pitchers and all the hitters. Overall, we handled it better than they did."
Hoffman improved to 1-1 after allowing just two unearned runs on five hits and four walks with eight strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Munson worked out of a jam in the seventh and recorded the final seven outs, four via strikeout, for his first save of the season and 14th of his career, matching the JMU record held by Bobby Lasko (2004-07).
Michael Kelly (0-3) took the loss for the Ospreys after allowing six runs, five earned, in six innings. He struck out nine and allowed six hits with two walks. He was the first of seven UNF pitchers in the contest.
Senior designated hitter Kent Burford (Waynesboro, Va./Stuarts Draft) went 3-for-4 for JMU with two RBIs. Redshirt senior first baseman Brett Garner (Burke, Va./Lake Braddock) drove in three runs on a single and a double while junior third baseman McKinnon Langston (Tallahassee, Fla./North Florida Christian) had a three-run home run.
Left fielder Preston Hale went 3-for-5 with two runs, a double, and a triple for North Florida. Ryan Roberson drove in three with a pair of doubles. Shortstop Andrew Hannon also had two hits with a walk.
The Dukes struck quickly in the second inning with Garner leading off with a double. Senior shortstop Mike Fabiaschi (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) laid down a sacrifice bunt with the throw from the third baseman sailing wide, allowing Garner to score. Burford followed with an RBI single through the left side for a 2-0 JMU advantage.
In the UNF third, Hannon singled with one out and stole second with two down. Hale then reached on a throwing error by redshirt junior second baseman Trevor Knight (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) to plate Hannon with the unearned run to cut the JMU lead to 2-1. After an infield single, right fielder Justin Preckajlo struck out but reached first on a wild pitch, allowing another unearned run to tie the score 2-2. The Ospreys proceeded to load the bases before a strikeout ended the inning.
JMU regained the lead in the fourth as senior left fielder Matt Browning (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) walked and stole second. Burford then picked up his second RBI of the game with a single to center for a 3-2 JMU lead.
In the sixth, Garner reached on a one-out walk and Burford picked up his third hit on a two-out single. Langston then smacked a three-run shot to left to put the Dukes ahead 6-2 through five and a half.
