NORFOLK, Va., April 2, 2010 - Old Dominion left-hander Kyle Hald limited James Madison to one run in a complete-game effort and the Monarchs broke open a scoreless game in the late innings to record a 6-1 victory on Friday night in the opener of a Colonial Athletic Association baseball series at the Bud Metheny Complex.
JMU had a three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 13-12 on the season, 4-3 in the CAA. The Dukes have now lost their last three against ODU, which improved to 13-17 overall, 2-2 in the league.
Kyle Hald improved to 5-2 with the complete-game effort, allowing just one run in the ninth on five hits with eight strikeouts.
Redshirt junior Kyle Hoffman (Reading, Pa./Twin Valley) took the loss despite a solid outing, holding ODU scoreless until the sixth and allowing just three hits in 6 1/3 innings. He finished with three runs allowed and matched his career high with nine strikeouts, the last also coming at ODU in 2008.
Both teams had just five hits in the game, but ODU took advantage of 10 walks by JMU pitchers. Corsner drove in two runs for the Monarchs with his home run and a sacrifice fly. Third baseman Jake McAloose doubled and walked three times.
Junior third baseman McKinnon Langston (Tallahassee, Fla./North Florida Christian) doubled and drove in the lone JMU run with a sacrifice fly with one out in the ninth.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Corsner connected on a solo home run. The Monarchs added runs in the seventh on an RBI single by designated hitter John Malbon and bases-loaded walks by catcher Edgar Hernandez and shortstop Chris Buss, both off JMU junior closer Kevin Munson (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring).
ODU continued adding runs in the eighth as second baseman Josh Wright led off with a solo shot to left field and Corsner added a sacrifice fly.
JMU's only run came in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Langston to score redshirt senior right fielder Matt Townsend (Lorton, Va./Hayfield).
JMU's best chance to score came in the first when freshman center fielder Johnny Bladel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) was hit by a pitch and redshirt junior first baseman Trevor Knight (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) singled with both advancing on an error. However, a lineout and consecutive strikeouts ended the inning. The Dukes also got runners to third in the third and sixth but couldn't push in the run.
The Dukes and Monarchs will compete in game two of the series on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
NOTES: With his first-inning single, Knight increased his current hitting streak to 15 games... senior left fielder Matt Browning (Mystic, Conn./Fitch) was 0-for-2 with a walk and a hit by pitch to see his 10-game streak come to an end.
