HARRISONBURG, Va., April 7, 2010 - Sophomore Tommi Nissinen (Oulu, Finland/Kastellin Lukio) beat Charlie Caris 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 to lead the Dukes to a 4-3 win over Georgetown at the Hillside Tennis Courts in Harrisonburg, Va. on Wednesday.
The Dukes avenged an earlier 3-2 loss to Georgetown to improve to 3-1 at home and 15-8 overall. The Hoyas lost for the third time in their last five to drop to 7-11 overall.
JMU swept doubles play to open up a 1-0 lead. Senior Mike Smith (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) and junior Matt King (Lorton, Va./Robinson) led the way with a 8-2 win over Andrew Bruhn and Bryan Miller at No. 1. Junior Yaroslav Voznenko (Kherson, Ukraine/Kherson Technical School) teamed with sophomore Ville Maaranen (Joensuu, Finland/Joensuun Lukio) to seal the point with an 8-6 win at No. 2. Freshmen Greg Vladimirsky (Coral Springs, Fla./Broward Virtual) and Stephen Hardy (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) completed the sweep with an 8-7(5) win over Caris and David Tillem.
Smith opened up a 2-0 lead for Madison, beating Tillem 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1. King beat Tim Walsh 6-4, 7-5 at No. 6 to put the Dukes one point shy of the victory before Nissinen sealed things with the three-set triumph.
The Dukes play their final regular season match of the season on Friday when the travel to Washington, D.C. for a showdown with George Washington.
