FAIRFAX, Va., Jan. 16, 2011 - Three players scored in double figures and James Madison (11-6, 4-1 CAA) defeated George Mason (7-9, 1-4 CAA) 83-54 in a Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball game on Sunday afternoon at the Patriot Center.
Senior guard Dawn Evans (Clarksville, Tenn./Northeast) scored 24 points and added six assists, both game highs. Sophomore guard Tarik Hislop (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) tallied a career-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting.
Sophomore forward Nikki Newman (Harrisonburg, Va./Turner Ashby) and junior center Rachel Connely (Tamaqua, Pa./Marian Catholic) also had career-high games as well. Newman scored 10 points off the bench and it was just the third time in her career she hit two treys, while Connely added eight points and six rebounds.
The Dukes jumped out to the early 7-2 lead just over three minutes into the game, but Mason trimmed JMU's lead to just 13-11 with 12:38 remaining in the first half. Leading 23-21 with 6:28 to go before halftime, Evans drained a three pointer to spark a 17-5 run to end the half and give the Dukes a 40-26 advantage into the locker room.
JMU opened the second stanza on a 9-2 run to take its largest lead of the contest at 49-28 with 15:57 to play in regulation. Mason never got any closer than 16 points the rest of the way and the Dukes led by as many as 31 points late in the game.
The Patriots were led by Brittany Poindexter, who scored 10 points and Evelyn Lewis tied for a game-high eight rebounds.
The Dukes controlled the glass with a 43-32 rebounding advantage and shot 50 percent from the floor, while limiting Mason to 37 percent. The win also marked the largest margin of victory for JMU this season.
JMU returns home on Thursday to host William and Mary (1-14, 0-5 CAA) while Mason takes on Drexel (11-5, 3-2 CAA) at home. Both contests are set for 7 p.m. starts.
