CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Nov. 18, 2011 – The James Madison diving team placed two divers in the top seven and four in the top 18 on the three-meter board at the Nike Cup being held at Maurice J. Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Friday.
Junior Kimberly Helfrich (Fort Belvoir, Va./West Springfield) was the top performer on the day for Madison, finishing fourth while freshman Alex Savage (Carrolton, Texas/Lewisville Hebron) took seventh. Senior Nicole Jotso (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) posted the 17th-best score in qualifying, edging out fellow senior Chelsea Savage (Bedford, Texas/L.D. Bell) who finished 18th.
JMU and tournament-host North Carolina were the only teams to place two divers in the finals. The field included 27 divers from nine different schools, including top programs in North Carolina, Duke, N.C. State and South Carolina.
Helfrich qualified in fifth with a 306.85. She improved to fourth in the finals by scoring a 302.35. Alex Savage scored a 282.85 in the prelims, qualifying eighth. She took just 0.30 points off the score in the finals to earn seventh-place points with a 282.55.
Jotso scored a 241.35 in the preliminaries while Chelsea Savage posted a score of 236.65.
