HARRISONBURG, Va., Nov. 5, 2012 - James Madison defeated Division II California (Pa.) 75-30 in a women's basketball exhibition game Saturday afternoon at the JMU Convocation Center.
The exhibition against California, a team receiving votes in the USA Today/ESPN Division II preseason poll, was the Dukes' first contest of the year.
JMU had a slow start and held just a five-point (18-13) lead with under seven minutes to play in the opening period. However, in the final 6:14 of the half the Dukes held the Vulcans scoreless while scoring 19 points to push their lead to 37-13 at intermission.
In that span JMU shot 60 percent (6-10) from the field and 75 percent (6-8) from the foul line, while California was 0-for-7 from the field and committed three turnovers. The Dukes held an 8-2 rebounding advantage in the last 6:14 of the half.
For the game JMU shot 43 percent (26-60) while the Vulcans only hit 23 percent (11-48) from the field. The Dukes held a 45-24 rebounding advantage.
The Dukes open regular-season play Friday (Nov. 11) at Quinnipiac (4 p.m.)
