From Canada Soccer Reports
OTTAWA, Canada, Dec. 20, 2011 -- Former James Madison women's soccer player Christina "Corky" Julien ('10) has been named to the Canada National Team roster for the upcoming 2012 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Julien was a starter on Canada's gold-medal team in last fall's Pan American Games and played for Canada in the 2011 World Cup in Germany. She has 32 international appearances with Canada since joining the team in February 2009..
Canada head coach John Herdman selected 20 players who will compete in the eight-team competition from Jan. 19-29, with all matches to be played at BC Place. Only the top two teams from the continental championship will qualify for the London 2012 Olympics.
"The team is very excited to show Canada what they can do in Vancouver," said Herdman. "The players have been training for this chance to represent Canada and they are fully deserving of their selection.
"We have to qualify (for the Olympics). It's not one of those events where you can start testing and developing players. It's an event we have to go in and win. And with that, we had to go and pick a squad that we felt would deliver us that outcome."
Julien, a former JMU All-America, was the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year. She completed her collegiate career ranked second on JMU's career goals list (44), second on the career points list (102) and tied 18th on the career assist list (14). Julien scored a JMU-record 19 career game-winning goals.
CONCACAF group stage matches will be held from Jan. 19-24 with Canada facing Haiti (Jan. 19), Cuba (Jan. 21) and Costa Rica (Jan. 23) in Group A. The top two teams from the four-team group advance to the semifinal stage. Teams competing in the opposite group are Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico and defending champion USA.
Both semifinal matches on Jan. 27 will determine next year's London 2012 Olympic participants. The finalists then advance to the CONCACAF championship match on Jan. 29.
Canada's 20-player roster for the CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament features 14 players who won gold at the recent Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. Five of the other six players were all FIFA Women's World Cup players, all of whom missed the Guadalajara 2011 tournament because of either club or school commitments or injury.
Canada's roster also features 11 players who participated in the last CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament in April 2008, helping Canada finish second in that continental championship. Ten of those 11 players also represented Canada at the Beijing 2008 Olympics, helping Canada reach the quarterfinal stage before bowing out in extra time to eventual Olympic champion USA.
Finally, Herdman's 20-player roster also includes 13 players who won gold at the 2010 CONCACAF Women's World Cup Qualifiers in November 2010. At that last CONCACAF championship just over a year ago, the top four finishers were Canada, Mexico, USA and Costa Rica.
Canada will open camp in early January in California. The team then arrives in Vancouver on Jan. 14 before the opening match on Jan. 19. All CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament matches will be broadcast by Sportsnet.
