ORONO, Maine., Dec. 8, 2011 - James Madison used a balanced team effort to down Maine 64-47 in women's basketball Thursday evening at Memorial Gym.
The Dukes improved their record to 6-1, while Maine dropped to 3-6 with its third straight loss.
Three Dukes scored in double figures, led by redshirt junior guard Jasmine Gill (Greensboro, N.C./Page) and junior guard Tarik Hislop (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch), with each finishing with 13 points. Redshirt senior forward Lauren Whitehurst (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) added 11 points.
Gill and junior guard/forward Nikki Newman (Harrisonburg, Va./Turner Ashby) tied for game rebounding honors with eight apiece.
Maine's Samantha Wheeler led all players with 18 points; she was the only Maine player to score in double figures. Wheeler converted five of eight field-goal tries and was eight-for-eight at the foul line.
JMU never trailed in the game, and the Dukes outscored Maine 24-6 over a 10-minute span to take an 18-point (26-8) lead with 8:50 left in the opening half.
The Dukes entered halftime leading by 17, 34-17, after shooting 37 percent (15-41) while limiting Maine to 23 percent (7-30) shooting from the floor.
The Black Bears turned the ball over 24 times, including 16 times in the first half, with the Dukes forcing most of those turnovers.
Maine scored the first six points of the second half, cutting the JMU lead to 11 (34-23), but got no closer.
