TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA— The James Madison men's golf team sits in 12th after the first day of the 2011 Seminole Intercollegiate, March 11. Hosted by Florida State, the event is a three-day, 54-hole tournament played at the Southwood Golf Course (Par 71- 7,172 yards). Â
   The tournament consists of 18 teams including Kennesaw State who finished the Barefoot at the Beach Intercollegiate in first place three days earlier. Madison shot an 18-over 302 in the first round with just eight shots separating sixth from 13th. The tournament is currently led by Arkansas at 7-under 277 with an 11-stroke lead over second-place Florida State at 3-over 287. Mississippi State is currently third at 5-over 289, with Kennesaw State at 6-over 290 and North Texas at 8-over 292 rounding out the top five squads.
   JMU's top player in the opening round is sophomore Rich Leeper (Chapel Hill, N.C./Carrboro), who is tied for 17th out of the 96 participants at 2-over 73 with teammate junior Chris Wellde (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial), who is entered as an individual. Sophomore Ryan Vince (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) is currently in a tie for 28th at 3-over 74. Junior Chad Monzingo (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) is tied for 53rd after the first round at 5-over 76, while junior Mike Smith (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) and sophomore Garrett Whitmore (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) both ended the first round at 8-over 79 in a tie for 74th. A pair of golfers are tied for the individual lead after the first 18 holes, as Sebastian Cappelen of Arkansas and North Texas' Carlos Ortiz each fired a 3-under 68.
   Day two tee times begin at 8:00 a.m., on Saturday for the Dukes, as they will go off the No. 10 tee and play with North Carolina and Jacksonville.
