MANAKIN SABOT, Va. - The James Madison men's golf team couldn't improve in the final round and finished at 15th at the 2011 VCU Shootout, Sept. 26. The two-day, 54-hole tournament was played at the Hermitage Country Club (Par 72) in Manakin Sabot, Va.
The Dukes couldn't move up in the standings on the last 18 and finished in 15th at 32-over 896. Second-round leader Virginia took home the team title by firing a final round-best 10-under 278 to finish at 27-under 837, seven shots ahead of runner-up East Carolina at 844. Wichita State was next in third at 12-under 852, with Iowa State at 854 and Virginia Tech's 855 rounding out the top five. Teams three through six were separated by just four shots.
Junior Rich Leeper (Chapel Hill, N.C./Carrboro) was the top Duke in a tie for 47th at 4-over 220, while freshman Trey Smith (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) tied for 53rd at 5-over 221. Senior Mike Smith (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) was next in 80th at 13-over 229, while senior Chris Wellde (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) tied for 81st at 14-over 230. Redshirt-junior Garrett Whitmore (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) was the final Duke, shooting a 15-over 231 to finish 87th. Iowa State's Scott Fernandez won the tournament with an 11-under 205, one shot better than Adam Stephenson of East Carolina at 206 and two better than East Carolina's Harold Varner at 9-under 207.
JMU will return to the course Mon.-Tue., Oct. 3-4 at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate in Raleigh, N.C.
