HARRISONBURG, Va., Jan. 26, 2012 - Defending Colonial Athletic Association baseball champion James Madison has been selected as the league's 2012 preseason favorite for the fourth straight season according to a poll of the league's 11 head coaches.
Each of last year's four CAA tournament representatives claimed first-place votes in the poll with the Diamond Dukes placed first on five of the 11 ballots with a total of 95 points. UNCW received two first-place votes and 88 total points followed by Old Dominion with two votes and 76 points and Georgia State with two votes and 74 points. VCU was tabbed fifth with 63 points followed by George Mason (46), Delaware (44), William and Mary (44), Towson (30), Hofstra (27) and Northeastern (19).
JMU finished first in the league for the second straight season in 2011 at 21-9 and swept three games at the CAA Championship in Wilmington, N.C. to claim the program's second league title. The Dukes finished 42-19 overall for the third-most wins in program history and had their best postseason finish since 1983 with a runner-up showing at the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional.
JMU returns five everyday starters led by junior outfielder Johnny Bladel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge, .360, 4 HR, 41 RBI, 26 SB), who earned Second Team All-CAA honors and was chosen as the Most Outstanding Player at the CAA Baseball Championship. Also back is Third Team All-CAA infielder Ty McFarland (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby,.278, 14 2B, 2 HR, 36 RBI), junior catcher/infielder Bradley Shaban (Midlothian, Va./Cosby, .271, 5 HR, 30 RBI), junior outfielder Cole McInturff (Centreville, Va./Westfield, .292, 47 runs, 22 SB), sophomore third baseman Conner Brown (Richmond, Va./Godwin, .268, 2 HR, 12 SB) and senior outfielder Ian Haynes (Danville, Va./Tunstall, .284, 23 SB).
On the mound, the Dukes feature a pair of veteran starters in preseason All-American Sean Tierney (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill, 10-1, 3.43 ERA) and senior Evan Scott (4-3, 5.94 ERA). Relievers Josh Futter (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake, 2-0, 4.61 ERA) and Nick Slogik (Strongsville, Ohio/St. Edward, 4-2, 5.95 ERA) each logged more than 40 innings, primarily in relief.
JMU begins practices Jan. 27 and opens its season Feb. 17-19 in the Caravelle Resort Tournament hosted by Coastal Carolina. The Dukes face the host Chanticleers on Friday and Boston College on Saturday. Madison then challenges Virginia on Sunday at BB&T Field, home of the Class Single-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans. JMU's home opener will be Feb. 22 at 4 p.m. against Longwood.
