MONROEVILLE, Pa., January 30, 2012 - The James Madison men's tennis team opened their spring season, splitting a pair of matches against Duquesne and Robert Morris on Friday, Jan. 27. The Dukes lost a hard fought battle with Duquesne 4-3, which included five, three-set singles matches, before sweeping Robert Morris 7-0 to start the season off 1-1.
Due to injury and illness, Duquesne only had five healthy players, causing them to default in their No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches.
JMU picked up the doubles point against Duquesne when Bertrand Moulin (Lyon, France/Aux Lazaristes Minimes (Wayne State)) and Greg Vladimirsky (Coral Springs, Fla./Broward Virtual) defeated Alam Abgaryan and Pete Carpenter, 8-7, and Ryan Pool (Melbourne, Australia/Braemar (Chattanooga)) and Florent Sentanac (Borderes, France/Lycee Theophile Gautier (Auburn Montgomery)) defeated Alex Aleman and Rich Robbie, 8-3.
Singles play saw all five matches reach a third set with JMU unfortunately unable to pull through in four of them. Vladimirsky won the first set against Abgaryan but took a turn for the worse when he dropped the next two, losing the match, 6-7, 6-1, 6-2. Pool evened-up singles play for the Dukes, defeating Duquesne's Carpenter 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, before JMU dropped the next three matches. DU's Robbie defeated JMU's Hugo Ramadier (Rome, Italy/Lycee Francais Chateabriand (Northern Arizona)), 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 followed by Aleman over Moulin, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 and Medhi Mekaoui over Sentanac 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.
In the second team-match of the day the Dukes defeated Robert Morris 7-0, sweeping all three doubles matches as well as all six singles matches, to earn their first team victory of the season.
In doubles play, Moulin and Vladimirsky defeated RMU's Jose Limon and Ricardo Horlle, 8-5, and Pool and Sentanac secured the point for JMU, defeating Angus Thomson and Tarun Kishan, 8-5. The Dukes earned the sweep after Tommi Nissinen (Oulu, Finland/Kastellin Lukio) and Jovan Milic (Belgrade, Serbia/Belgrade Sports School) defeated Andre Coiro and Aaron Haas, 8-2.
Singles play started with Vladimirsky defeating Coiro in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0 and Pool over Limon also in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. With the Dukes now leading 3-0, Hugo Ramadier lost the first set to Thomson before rallying to win the match in three sets, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1, and ensuring a JMU team victory. In the final two matches of the day, Nissinen topped Horlle, 6-1, 6-2 and Bastien Russo (Lyon, France/Notre Dame des Minimes/Shorter) outplayed Igor Neves, 6-0, 6-1 to complete the overall sweep for JMU.
JMU is back on the courts Sunday, February 12, opening Colonial Athletic Association play at Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va.
