HARRISONBURG, Va., March 16, 2012 - The James Madison men's tennis team fell 4-2 to Eastern Kentucky Friday. The Dukes dropped to 4-6 overall while the Colonels improved to 11-5.
After battling rain and wet courts, only singles matches were played. However, Eastern Kentucky won in the top four positions to earn the match win.
At No. 2 singles EKU's Niklas Schroeder took down Ryan Pool (Melbourne, Australia/Braemar(Chattanooga)) in straight sets, 7-6, 6-1, to earn the Colonels the first point of the match. Hugo Kleintovsky then defeated Greg Vladimirsky(Coral Springs, Fla./Broward Virtual), 7-5, 6-2, at No. 1 singles to put Eastern Kentucky up 2-0.
Hugo Ramadier (Rome, Italy/Lycee Francais Chateabriand (Northern Arizona)) struck back at the No. 5 singles position for the Dukes, picking up the win over Joao Maio in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, to put Madison within one of the Colonels.
Eastern Kentucky, however, sealed the match with back-to-back wins at the No.4 and No. 3 singles positions. In the four-spot, Phil Janz topped Bertrand Moulin (Lyon, France/Aux Lazaristes Minimes(Wayne State)), 7-6, 6-3 and Parul Verma ousted Florent Sentenac (Borderes, France/Lycee Theophile Gautier(Auburn Montgomery)), 6-2, 6-3, in the No. 3 position to pick up the Colonel's fourth point and the team victory in the match.
Rounding out play in the sixth singles position, Tommi Nissinen (Oulu, Finland/Kastellin Lukio)beat Carles Pons in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3, to pick up JMU's second point.
The Dukes return to action on Sunday, March 18 against St. Francis (Pa.) in a 1 p.m. contest. The previously scheduled match between JMU and Norfolk State on March 17 has been cancelled due to scheduling conflicts by NSU.
