Football Announces Addition of Latrell Scott to Coaching Staff

HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison University football has added Latrell Scott as an assistant coach, Head Coach Mickey Matthews announced today. Scott will take over coaching the tight ends for the Dukes and fills the full-time slot left by the departure of J.C. Price to coach the defensive line at Marshall University.

"When I look to fill a position on our staff, I always want to fill it with the best available coach and I believe we have done that with Latrell," Matthews said. "He has a proven ability to coach and recruit and comes highly recommended by everyone and every place he has been. He has made some mistakes and has taken responsibility for them. He is an excellent teacher and recruiter and we are extremely happy to have him in the JMU Nation."

"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to join Coach Matthews' staff," Scott said. "The one thought I have is to be the best coach and recruiter I can be and to be a good example for the members of the present JMU team. I am excited to get on the field and coaching again."

Scott is very familiar with the Colonial Athletic Association, having two stints in his coaching career at the University of Richmond. Most recently, he was the head coach at Richmond, where he led the Spiders to a 6-5 record during the 2010 season. Battling through a rash of injuries -- including significant time missed to three different QBs -- Scott kept Richmond in the playoff hunt until the final week of the season.

A highly-regarded recruiter and graduate of Lee-Davis High School in Richmond, Scott brings 12 years of coaching experience to Harrisonburg after spending the 2008 and 2009 seasons as the wide receivers coach at the University of Tennessee and the University of Virginia, respectively.

Prior to joining the Volunteers' staff in 2008, Scott served for three years at Richmond as the wide receivers coach from 2005-2007. He was promoted to assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator before the 2007 campaign. Richmond was 26-12, made two NCAA Playoff appearances and beat a BCS team (Duke) with Scott on staff. The Spiders shattered the offensive record books in 2007, which ended with a then-school record 11 wins and the school's first-ever appearance in the National Semifinals. Of the 10 team records eclipsed in that season, Scott's wide receivers helped the Spiders set new standards for scoring average (34.9), touchdowns (63) and total offense (5,675).

Scott arrived in Richmond after spending three seasons as wide receivers coach at VMI. During his tenure in Lexington, the Keydets led the Big South Conference in passing in 2003.

His first coaching assignment was at Fork Union Military Academy, where he spent two seasons before being named an assistant at Western Carolina in 2001.

A three-year starter at tight end during his playing days at Hampton, Scott earned All-America honors following his senior season. He played on two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and NCAA playoff teams and also competed in the Gridiron All-Star Classic in Orlando, Fla. Scott graduated with a sport management degree in 1999.

Scott is married to the former Brandi Bradby of New Kent, Va.
